"The Stratix II family is a testament to Altera's commitment to invest significantly in R&D. Speed and density improvements with new FPGA products are always expected, but the increases in the Stratix II family are above my expectations.
First, the architectural innovations in Stratix II will give me an additional boost in usable gates. For example, the rounding feature in the DSP blocks enables me to use fewer logic resources for the imaging functions in our printer products. Also, the added flexibility in the Stratix II PLL circuits expands their usefulness, allowing me to reduce or eliminate the need to allocate logic resources for these functions. With continued support for 3.3-volt I/O and the ability to drive 5.0-volt TTL, I can avoid the additional cost and complexity of external components to shift voltage levels.
These and other features provided by the Stratix II family will keep Altera at the top of my FPGA list. As our customers demand more features and faster products, I think the Stratix II family will help us meet or exceed those expectations while keeping our development and product costs in check."

"I have developed programmable logic device designs for the last decade. During that time, I’ve used tools from both Xilinx and Altera.
A customer recently contracted our services to develop a PCI-X board, insisting that I use Xilinx Virtex-II devices. I quickly did a cost comparison of the Xilinx solution with Altera’s Stratix II devices, which also met the customer’s needs, and determined that the Altera solution was far less expensive. For the first manufacturing run of 100 boards, the Altera solution was close to half a million dollars lower in cost than the Xilinx solution.
When a design opportunity arises, I look at offerings from both Altera and Xilinx to find the best fit. I evaluate device functionality, time-to-market (as reflected by tools), and cost of the completed device design. I have never found a case where the Xilinx offering would have been a better choice over the Altera solution. There is just no comparison."
