Winner of the 2005 SUPERquest Award for Continuous Achievement, Motorola’s MOTOwi4 Canopy platform is a robust, high-speed wireless broadband solution for cost-effective connectivity for private networks (such as governments or enterprises) and for Internet service providers and carriers. The Canopy platform, part of the MOTOwi4 wireless access solutions, is a scalable, reliable platform that supports high speed broadband applications. Its superior performance can provide for one of the lowest total costs of ownership and is designed to significantly reduce a provider's start-up, maintenance, and leased-line costs. The Canopy point-to-point and point-to-multipoint system configurations are deployed in more than 100 countries around the world. Motorola chose Cyclone series FPGAs for the Canopy platform because of their ability to implement system-level complexity at the lowest cost. Cyclone series FPGAs are used in both the access points and subscriber modules of the Canopy system. Access points include integrated antennas and are used to distribute wireless service to the surrounding community. Subscriber modules are the Internet access receivers, and are installed at each customer site. Access points and subscriber modules can be easily upgraded in the field by transmitting FPGA reconfiguration information to them, allowing the service provider to accommodate changes in customer demand by making enhancements or adding functionality. "Motorola has relied on Altera’s low-cost FPGAs for four generations of the MOTOwi4 Canopy platform, and the compelling value proposition of the Cyclone II devices allows us to continue that trend. The advances in Cyclone II devices—including embedded multipliers, increased density, unparalleled performance and the lowest-cost structure of any FPGA family—enable significant new capabilities in the Canopy products. Altera’s powerful Nios II processor further reinforces Canopy’s position as a high-performing, proven solution for building and enhancing cost-effective and reliable wireless broadband networks."
