Altera Corporate Giving Program Guidelines
As a responsible corporate citizen, Altera is committed to making a positive and meaningful impact on the communities in which our employees live and work. Altera believes that by sharing its resources with these communities, we invest in the long-term well-being and success of future generations. Through the Altera® Corporate Giving Program, Altera provides funding and volunteer work to local non-profit organizations, with a primary focus on education K-12, social welfare, and at-risk youth. Through the Altera Community Team (ACT) volunteer program, Altera employees donate their time and skills to a variety of volunteer opportunities throughout their communities.
Corporate Giving Program Mission
Altera's primary investment areas lie in community development of health, education, and welfare programs, particularly those intended for today's youths. Specific focus areas include:
- K-12 Education: Emphasis on programs that build capabilities in science, math, and technology and that focus on developing critical thinking, language, and communication skills
- At-Risk Youth: Prevention, education, and early intervention programs that improve the physical, mental, and social health of children, helping them become productive members of our communities
- Health and Human Services: Local and national health and human service agencies (e.g., The American Cancer Society, The American Heart Association, and The Salvation Army), hospitals, youth agencies (e.g., The Boys and Girls Club), agencies for senior citizens, and other health and human service agencies, including those concerned with safety, family planning, drug abuse, and disaster relief
Funding Eligibility
Contributions will be distributed in cash grants between $500 and $5,000. To be eligible for financial support from the Altera Corporate Giving Program, an organization must:
- Be a non-profit organization exempt from federal tax under Section 501©(3) of IRS
- Direct at least 50% of the organization or project's services to the communities in which Altera employees work and live
- Have non-discriminatory policies or practices and operate in compliance with state and federal laws
Ineligible organizations and programs:
- Religious or fraternal groups
- Political organizations
- Organizations who support areas outside eligible communities
- Fund-raisers or advertising for fundraising purposes
- Raffles, auctions, gifts or prizes
- Sports events or programs
- Individuals
Eligible Communities
The Altera Corporate Giving Program will consider proposals from organizations whose programs or projects serve the communities in which Altera has significant employee representation. Initially, this includes Santa Clara County, San Mateo County, and Alameda County, which are all in California.
Restrictions on Altera funding
- We make cash grants only; we do not make equipment donations.
- We fund specific projects, not general operating expenses.
- We offer grants only to tax-exempt, non-profit organizations. Applicants must be either an organization that has tax exemption under IRS Code Section 501©(3), or a publicly funded academic institution.
Application Process
If your programs meet the Altera Corporate Giving program's focus and eligibility criteria, complete the application form and submit it to Altera electronically. Incomplete forms will not be processed. Please abide by the length restrictions in the application form, but feel free to attach additional information such as brochures, pictures, annual reports, etc. However, attached information is only supplemental to the form and cannot be submitted in place of the application. We regret that we are not able to return any submitted information.
In addition to the application form, submit a proposal that includes the following information:
- Organization profile: A description of the organization requesting funds, its purpose and mission, a history of its accomplishments and results, and current commitments
- Proposal summary: A brief outline of the specific program or project to be funded, the specific amount of funds requested, the percentage of administrative expenses how the funds will be used, the program duration, targeted recipients, and other funding sources
- Supporting documentation: A copy of the organization's 501©(3) letter of tax exemption from the IRS
- Contact person for corporate giving
The Altera Donations Committee meets once per quarter to review donation requests. All requests received during that period are reviewed at that time. Requestors will be notified the status of their request by mail.
