Axis Systems Selects Altera For New Reconfigurable Computing Engine

  • RCC Verification Engine Uses Altera's FLEX® 10K Device Family
  • Offers Designers A Faster Way to Verify Their Designs
  • Fast Compile Times of MAX+PLUS® II Plus Industry's Largest Devices Key to Selection

San Jose, Calif., May 26, 1998--Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR) today announced that Axis Systems (Sunnyvale, Calif.), a new Electronic Design Automation (EDA) company addressing the verification market, has selected Altera's FLEX 10K device family for its reconfigurable computing-based (RCC) product line. The two companies have signed an OEM agreement enabling Axis to embed Altera's algorithm-optimization and place-and-route software in the RCC product line.

Altera's FLEX 10K devices are being used to implement Axis's RCC engine. Later this year, Axis plans to introduce verification technology that maps designs in excess of 1 million gates onto an array of Altera's devices. This will allow for faster verification than software simulation and a better price-to-performance ratio than current emulation and hardware acceleration technology. Axis will utilize the industry's largest programmable logic device, the FLEX 10K250A, in their RCC engine.

"Before committing to Altera's FLEX 10K device family, we evaluated all the programmable devices available," said Steven Wang, Axis's vice president of marketing. "Based on our RCC requirement of fast compile time along with high logic utilization, Altera's programmable device architecture was the perfect fit for our needs. Because of our strong partnership with Altera, the first reconfigurable computing application for design verification will be available later this year."

Axis Systems Reconfigurable Computing is a massively parallel architecture by which compute-intensive tasks are mapped onto hundred of thousands of reconfigurable computing elements. Reconfigurable elements are custom processors designed for a single task. Architecture for RCC is based on a Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) algorithm. Communication between processing elements is based on a systolic array structure by which data is transferred between nearest neighbors. For compactness and high performance operation, the RCC engine resides within Sun Microsystems workstation(s) with direct connection to the PCI backplane.

"Axis's RCC engine provides a highly innovative approach to accelerate functional verification by orders of magnitude using Altera devices," said Bob Beachler, Altera's director of development tools marketing. "By utilizing our FLEX 10K device family exclusively in their system, it further demonstrates our leadership in high-performance and high-density devices. Further, the RCC technology promises to have a major impact on the next wave of computing and Altera is dedicated to provide the best programmable logic tools and devices available to support this technology." Altera has been working with Axis since the company's inception, providing device and tool information, as well as direct engineering support. "I am excited about the potential of Axis," continued Mr. Beachler. "Its management team has had great success with previous start-ups, and we look forward to their success in the EDA marketplace."
