Altera Appoints Robert Buck President of Altera Japan

San Jose, Calif., October 22, 1998--Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR) today announced the appointment of Robert V. Buck Jr. as president of Altera Japan. In this capacity, Mr. Buck will be responsible for managing the sale and support of all Altera products in Japan. He will report directly to Pete Smyth, vice president of sales for Altera.

Mr. Buck comes to Altera with a strong background and extensive experience in the programmable logic device (PLD) industry. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Buck was director of Japan and Asia Pacific sales for AMD/Vantis, where he reported directly to that company's CEO.
Prior to Vantis, Mr. Buck held various sales and marketing positions with Advanced Micro Devices for some 10 years. Before that, Mr. Buck was a software engineer for General Electric Calma Company in Austin, Texas. Mr. Buck has a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.
