Altera Establishes University Partnership Program to Encourage Academic Excellence in Electrical Engineering

  • Students from Top Electrical Engineering Universities to Receive Scholarships, Fellowships
  • Altera to Donate in Excess of a Half-Million Dollars Annually

San Jose, Calif., November 2, 1998--Altera Corporation (Nasdaq:ALTR) today announced the establishment of a University Partnership Program (UPP), a scholarship program that seeks to encourage academic activity in the fields of electrical engineering and computer science. Total annual funding for this program exceeds one-half-million dollars. Qualified students from 12 top electrical engineering universities in North America and the United Kingdom will be eligible to receive undergraduate scholarships, graduate research fellowships, or grants from Altera to encourage their studies.

"This program will provide financial assistance for academically outstanding undergraduates and graduates planning to enter electrical engineering and computer science related disciplines," said Rodney Smith, Altera's president and CEO. "By providing these funds, Altera seeks to enhance the educational experiences of students and assist their academic pursuits in engineering."

Students from the following universities will be eligible to apply for the UPP undergraduate scholarships and graduate research fellowships and grants: Cambridge University, Carnegie Mellon University, Cornell University, Imperial College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Oxford University, Stanford University, University of California-Berkeley, University of California-Los Angeles, University of Illinois, University of Texas-Austin, and University of Toronto. The 12 UPP universities comprise many of the top electrical engineering programs in the world. The eight domestic universities rank in the top 15 of U.S.-based electrical engineering programs, as determined by the Gourman Report, an annual survey of undergraduate programs.

Eligibility Requirements

Junior and senior electrical engineering and computer science majors with a 3.5-or-better grade point average may apply for the UPP undergraduate scholarships. Those applying from American universities must be United States citizens or permanent residents. Candidates will submit essays on how a UPP scholarship will help their education, as well as letters of recommendation from faculty, and an outline of their career goals in electrical engineering or computer science.

Interested electrical engineering and computer science graduate students associated with faculty conducting research, applicable to programmable logic, may also apply for research funding. Graduate students from U.S. universities must be United States citizens or permanent residents. In conjunction with faculty, qualified students may submit specific project proposals outlining their areas of research. This might include novel applications for programmable logic devices (PLDs) and general research geared toward PLD industry objectives.

A selection committee comprising Altera's senior technical management will review the applications and determine the award recipients. For more information on the University Partnership Program, contact UPP@altera.com.
