Altera Sweepstakes Winner Donates $20,000 Prize To Marshall Elementary School In Oakland, Calif.

San Jose, Calif., November 9, 1999-- Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR) today announced that Carlin Vieri, MicroDisplay Corporation senior VLSI engineer, is the winner of the "$20K for APEXTM 20K" sweepstakes. Carlin will receive a new 3Com Palm VII organizer and Altera Corporation will make a $20,000 charitable donation in Carlin's name to the charity of his choosing, Marshall Elementary School located in Oakland, California. From a list of possible charitable organizations, Carlin chose to donate the money to his local school district. A ceremony to present the school with the donation will take place at the Oakland Unified School District board meeting on Wednesday, November 10, 1999. Marshall Elementary School plans to use the donation towards the purchase of resources to improve the math and science education of the students.

"Altera is pleased to take part in this opportunity to enhance primary education, especially within our local community," said Cliff Tong, Altera vice president of product marketing. "The winner's donation will help the current and future students of Marshall Elementary School to advance in the highly important fields of math and science."

"It was extremely important to me that this donation encourage and improve children's math and science learning," said Carlin Vieri, MicroDisplay senior VLSI engineer. "After carefully researching various schools, I choose Marshall Elementary School both to improve their technology-based resources and because this donation will have a particularly significant impact at the school."

"We are thrilled that Carlin has selected Marshall Elementary School as the recipient of this generous donation," said Celestine Watkins, Marshall Elementary School principal. "With the donation we plan to create a computer lab for the students, to help them better understand current technology."
