Altera is the First Programmable Logic Company Selected for Compaq Golden Master Program

San Jose, CA and Houston, TX, December 13, 1999 -- Altera® Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR) today announced that it has been selected as the first programmable logic company to participate in the Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) Golden Master Program which guarantees Altera early access to Compaq's PCI-X technology. Membership in Compaq's PCI-X Golden Master Program allows Altera to take full advantage of Compaq's PCI system design expertise, as well as license its PCI-X technology. This alliance will allow Altera's customers to receive PCI-X technology quickly, so that they can start next-generation designs now. In a related announcement, Altera has become the first semiconductor company to introduce a PCI-X intellectual property core, available immediately. Altera manufactures programmable logic devices (PLDs) that are used in enterprise and embedded applications such as Gigabit Ethernet, Fiber Channel, Cluster Interconnects, and IP Telephony.

"Compaq's Golden Master Program enables Altera to quickly expand its industry-leading PCI IP portfolio, which is targeted for FLEX® and APEXTM devices," according to Craig Lytle, senior director of Altera's intellectual property business unit. "With access to this program, Altera continues its PCI programmable logic leadership, and is able to quickly achieve the introduction of a product that is an integral part of our comprehensive PCI strategy." Altera was first in the industry to prove that PLDs are capable of 66-MHz performance by shipping a fully parameterized 64-bit/66-MHz PCI core.

"Compaq continues to promote PCI-X product development and integration throughout the industry," said Ken Jansen, Director of Advanced Server Architecture and Design, Industry Standard Server Division, Compaq Computer Corporation. "Altera is the first programmable logic member of the Compaq Golden Master Program. We look forward to working with Altera on PCI-X based technology today and in the future."

About the Golden Master Program

As the leader in development of PCI-X technology, Compaq has formed the Golden Master Program to enable best-in-class PCI-X solutions to the industry. Golden Master Program members include several industry-leading vendors, selected by Compaq, who are licensing Compaq's PCI-X technology and providing added value to best serve their customers. Compaq provides Golden Master participants with valuable tools and information that will simplify and accelerate industry adoption of PCI-X based products.

Evolutionary PCI-X Technology

PCI-X based technology is a compatible extension of the existing PCI (peripheral component interface) bus. The 64-bit PCI-X architecture runs at speeds up to 133 MHz, providing transfer rates above 1 gigabyte per second, up to four times the speed of the most common PCI bus technology. In addition to performance improvements, PCI-X also increases the fault isolation of the PCI bus.

PCI-X offers both added performance and flexibility, minimizing the trade-off between PCI slots and bus speed. For example, based on preliminary simulation testing, a 66-MHz four-slot implementation of PCI-X showed more than a twenty-five percent increase in I/O performance over a conventional PCI bus running at its maximum configuration (64-bit/66-MHz). It is also possible to use multiple PCI-X bus segments at different speeds, providing a combination of ultra-high performance and maximum slot capacity.
