Altera Publishes White Paper on Hard Subsystems In Embedded Processor PLDs

Document Details Advantages of Embedding a Complete Subsystem for Performance Optimization

San Jose, Calif., March 4, 2002 -- Altera Corporation (Nasdaq: ALTR) today released a white paper titled "The Advantages of Hard Subsystems in Embedded Processor PLDs." The white paper describes the performance, cost and functional advantages of embedding a subsystem into the die of programmable logic devices (PLDs) that integrate embedded processors. These advantages include unique features such as the option to allow the processor to control configuration of the device and the ability to run a real-time operating system (RTOS) immediately after system boot. The white paper is available now at http://www.altera.com/literature/wp/wp_adv_exc.pdf.

The first ARM®-based Excalibur device was unveiled at last year's Embedded Systems Conference. Armed with almost a year's worth of experience in the market, Mark Dickinson, vice president of Altera's Excalibur business unit and European Technology Center said, "There's a hotly debated issue in the land of ASICs and PLDs about the optimum ratio of configurable silicon to dedicated silicon needed in a device intended for system-level design. In most systems, processors are almost always accompanied by a host of other functions including memory, interfaces and other peripherals, so it makes sense for architects of system-level devices to embed these additional functions into the die alongside the processor."

As the trend continues towards embedding hard intellectual property (IP), such as microprocessors, into PLDs, vendors of programmable logic must determine what components of the device should be embedded into the die. Dickinson continues, "It was clear from our research and the input from our customers that embedding a complete subsystem into the processor was the way to go. It's been almost a year since we began offering this product, and our customers continue to tell us we're on the right track. Altera's solutions offer both embedded and PLD designers the intrinsic value proposition of programmable logic: ease-of-use and time-to-market."

Altera experts will be on hand at the Embedded Systems Conference next week to discuss this and other issues, including the ability of PLDs such as the recently announced Stratix device family to displace ASICs, digital signal processors (DSPs) and ASSPs. Altera's complete embedded processor solution, including the Nios soft core processor, the ARM-based Excalibur devices and related development and design tools, will be on display at booth number 1414 from March 13 to 15 at the Moscone Convention Center. The white paper will also be distributed at the event. For more information about the Embedded Systems Conference, visit: http://www.altera.com/education/events/northamerica/evt-esc2002.html.
