CompactPCI SYS - Data Acquisition/Processing & Prototyping CompactPCI Board

from PLDApplications

PLDApplications CompactPCI SYS board features an Altera® programmable logic device that is the single point of acquisition and processing on the board. All of the data flow goes through the Altera device, allowing maximum speed for all application processes, including data acquisition, parallel (multi-channel) processing, and PCI transfers up to 64 bits/66 MHz.

The software provided with the board includes drivers and a programming API (DLLs) for Windows 95, 98, NT, and 2000; Solaris, and others. Programmers can easily use the software with industry standards or proprietary data and image capture products (e.g., LABVIEW from National Instruments).

The PCI interface core is fully parameterizable and can be used in any application that requires interfacing based on the PCI protocol. The core handles all of the required features for the bus standard. It supports and provides some unique features such as multi-function, multi-direct memory access (DMA), embedded memory controllers, and more.

As a parameterized function, most of the core capabilities can be enabled or disabled depending on design requirements, so silicon usage and performance are optimized. The core supports full speed, zero wait-states, and burst transfers in both slave and master operation. Figure 1 shows a block diagram of the board.

Features

  • Support of various configurations with 32/64 bits and 33/66 MHz PCI transactions
  • Direct memory access (DMA), up to 528 MBytes/second
  • LVDS I/O path (33 bits in, 10 bits bidirectional, 1 reference clock in, 200 MHz)
  • 512K x 32 bits synchronous SRAM
  • Four user LEDs
  • V2 RS-232 connectors
  • PMC32 and PMC64 interfaces
  • Two TOR inputs for triggering
  • One of the following options, depending on the board configuration:
    • Full PCI mezzanine card (PMC) including user signals
    • Standard small outline DIMM 144 SDRAM connector (128 MBytes, 256 Mbytes, and so on
    • IDE interface
  • Cables available in various formats (SCSI100 to 2*DB37+DB15, SCSI100 to free ended, etc.)
  • Altera programmable logic devices (PLDs) for embedded high speed data and signal processing (ACEX™ , FLEX®, APEX™ )
  • Dynamic reconfiguration of the Altera PLD over the PCI bus
  • Software kit with graphical user interface applications for monitoring and exercising the CompactPCI SYS board
  • Software development kit, including a reusable PCI device driver
  • Various standard off-the-shelf daughter cards are available (for example, prototyping breadboard, four channels, gigabit communication)
  • Daughter card connectors for custom hardware interfacing (e.g., LVTTL, analog to digital, fiber optic, etc.)
  • Compliance with the PCI Special Interest Group (SIG) PCI Local Bus Specification, Revision 2.2
  • Compliance with the PICMG CompactPCI Specification, Revision 2.1 and with the PICMG Hot Swap Specification, Revision 1.0
  • Support of additional standards, including PMC (MMSCPMC Specification, Draft 2.4)
  • Standard PLD Applications PCI intellectual property (IP) cores; a free license can be used with the CompactPCI SYS board
  • Target-mode advanced features, including the following (refer to the PCI core users’ manual for additional features):
    • True multi-function support (up to four functions), with up to four interrupt lines
    • Support of all base address registers (BARs) in 32- and 64-bit addressing modes
    • Embedded memory controller for each implemented BAR, allowing for direct memory interfacing (SRAM, DPRAM, or FIFO buffer)
    • Configuration space which can be mapped into memory space
  • Master-mode advanced features, including:
    • Up to four independently-operated, embedded DMA channels
  • Complete support of memory write and invalidate (MWI) command for DMA transfer optimization
  • 64-bit addressing and 64-bit data transfers supported (dynamically negotiated)
