Note:
To use the Nios II Processor Embedded Design Suite (EDS), you must first install both the
Quartus II software and the MegaCore IP Library.
Recommended Linux and UNIX Download and Installation Instructions:
Download the desired components. You may choose to download either the UNIX (Solaris) or Linux Quartus II software. Other components (Nios II EDS, MegaCore IP Library, and ModelSim-Altera software) can be downloaded as well.
Ensure there is sufficient free disk space to contain copies of the uncompressed versions of these files.
Extract the Quartus II Linux or Solaris software using the following command: tar xvf 72_quartus_linux.tar or tar xvf 72_quartus_solaris.tar
Execute the 'quartus/solaris/install' script (extracted relative to the current directory).
Follow the same procedure for each additional component (Nios II EDS, intellectual property, and ModelSim software), making sure to target the same base installation directory (e.g. /usr2/altera) so that each tool is at the same relative location.

Arrange all the downloaded files together in one directory. For install setup, ensure there is sufficient free disk space (approximately 4 Gbytes) to contain copies of the uncompressed versions of these files. An additional 5 Gbytes of disk space is required for software installation.
Extract the Altera UNIX/Linux download installer using the following command: tar xvf 72_altera_installer.tar
Execute the 'install_download' script that now resides in the current directory.
Select the appropriate options in the installation script to install the software.

To download and uncompress all files (Quartus II software, MegaCore IP Library, Nios II processor, and ModelSim-Altera software) requires 4 Gbytes of free disk space. Installation requires an additional 5 Gbytes of disk space. You can delete the 4 Gbytes of download and uncompressed files from your hard drive after installation is complete.
